Cboe Seeks SEC Approval to Extend Options Trading Hours Amid Global Demand Surge
Cboe has filed with the SEC to introduce extended trading sessions for select equity options, proposing a morning window from 7:30 a.m. to 9:25 a.m. and an afternoon slot from 4 p.m. to 4:15 p.m. New York time. The MOVE aligns with equity exchanges' global expansion and caters to investors needing to respond to international market events during off-hours.
The derivatives giant reported a 68% surge in equity option volumes to 1.29 billion contracts in September compared to two years prior, driven by retail participation and zero-day expiry contracts. Liquidity will be prioritized through a selective rollout targeting high-volume, large-cap options—a calculated approach reflecting Cboe's dominance in handling 1 in 3 U.S. equity option trades.
